The health benefits of getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis are very well documented indeed, everything from helping you to maintain a healthy weight and keeping your heart healthy to improving concentration and focus, reducing memory loss, boosting your mood, supporting your immune system… and many more!
But, of course, it’s often far easier said than done to sleep well consistently, with the pressures of everyday life getting in the way more often than we like and difficulty sleeping an ever-present reality for a lot of us out there.
If you’re concerned that you may have insomnia, ask yourself if you regularly struggle to fall asleep or regularly find it hard to stay asleep, waking up several times in the night.
If you feel fatigued after waking, feel tired or irritable during the day, have difficulty concentrating because of fatigue or find yourself either lying awake at night or waking up early and can’t go back to sleep, you may also be struggling with insomnia.
On average, adults need to get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night, while children need between nine and 13 hours in order to feel properly rested, and if we don’t get the rest we need it can quickly take its toll on our mental and emotional health and wellbeing.
The good news is that you don’t have to sit back and accept your fate, however, and there’s a lot you can do to facilitate a good night’s sleep, everything from getting regular exercise and establishing a solid bedtime routine to avoiding alcohol, not eating dinner too late, ensuring that your bedroom is at an ambient temperature and so on.
There is one avenue of help you might not have tried before and that’s acupuncture, one of the oldest medical practices in the world and one that has been found to be particularly effective for treating a wide range of different conditions.
How can acupuncture help with insomnia?
Going for regular acupuncture treatments can help improve your sleep quality, reduce any feelings of anxiety you may have, help with pain relief, increase the total amount of sleep you get each night and reduce the number of times you wake up in the night.
Unlike certain medications, acupuncture can help address the root cause of your insomnia and treat it in a more holistic way, rather than just tackling the symptoms.
Your acupuncturist will ask you lots of questions about your general health, work and any life stress you may be experiencing, as well as diet and overall lifestyle to help drive long-term positive change.
Here at Acuwellness, I adopt an integrated approach to the practice, combining traditional Chinese medicine techniques with other styles like massage, meditation, moxibustion and cupping. If you’d like to find out more, get in touch with me today.
